DEGALAN® for Ceramic Transfer Lacquers

Thermoplastic Methacrylic Resins for Durable Décor

Röhm’s DEGALAN® resins are widely used in ceramic transfer lacquers, ensuring optimum adhesion of décors on tiles, glass, and crockery. They deliver residue-free depolymerization, excellent pigmentability, and high resistance to everyday wear—resulting in attractive and durable designs.

Ceramic transfer lacquers act as carriers for inorganic pigments and glass powder. Applied as a film onto ceramic parts, they undergo depolymerization during firing at temperatures up to 1200 °C. During glazing, the pigments melt with the glass powder and unite permanently with the ceramic substrate. DEGALAN® ensures a strong and reliable bond throughout this process.

Marine Paints and Container Coatings with DEGALAN®

Reliable Protection for Demanding Environments

DEGALAN® thermoplastic methacrylic resins are widely used as binders in marine paints and container coatings, particularly for intermediate layers and top coats. They deliver excellent weathering resistance, outstanding UV protection, and improved yield compared to traditional binders.

Ships, superstructures, and containers are typically coated in multiple layers. Following a corrosion protection primer, one or two intermediate coats and a top coat are applied. When formulated with DEGALAN®, these coatings provide the durability and weather protection required for long-term performance.

In addition, selected DEGALAN® products hold approval numbers from leading global paint manufacturers authorizing their use across all production sites worldwide.

DEGALAN® for PVC Top Coats

Hard, Durable, and Flexible Surface Protection

Röhm offers a wide range of DEGALAN® grades for PVC top coats, suitable for substrates such as paper, thermoplastics, metals, and polyolefins.

Unplasticized PVC is naturally hard and brittle, while plasticized PVC becomes flexible but prone to plasticizer migration, which can cause surface tackiness. DEGALAN® polymers based on MMA such as DEGALAN® M 345 and M 920 prevent this tackiness by forming very hard, protective coatings.

DEGALAN® also provides excellent miscibility, allowing coatings to be tailored to the specific plasticizer content of the substrate. Crosslinking with isocyanates yields highly resistant surfaces, while specially crosslinked DEGALAN® grades optimize antiblocking and lubrication properties and can be used as dulling agents for film applications.

DEGALAN® Low Profile Additives for Unsaturated Polyesters

Minimizing Shrinkage, Maximizing Performance

The curing of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) typically results in significant shrinkage (7–10%) due to polymerization, which can reduce dimensional stability, impair surface quality, and weaken mechanical properties.

DEGALAN® Low Profile Additives (LPAs) are thermoplastics designed to effectively counteract this shrinkage during high-temperature forming processes, such as compression molding of sheet molding compounds (SMCs) and injection molding of bulk molding compounds (BMCs).

Polymethyl methacrylate copolymers (PMMA) are among the most effective LPAs, offering not only shrinkage reduction but also a high heat deflection temperature (≥ 200 °C) and excellent mechanical properties in the final product. These advantages make DEGALAN® LP 53/13C a preferred choice for demanding applications in the automotive and electrical industries. Sold as solids, DEGALAN® LPAs are typically introduced into SMC/BMC blends as a styrene solution.
